| Overview |
| Access to a LILAC server from remotely located
desk-top PC's, travelling notebook computers or
hand-held PDA devices is relatively easy to
configure, provided your Internet connectivity
and local-to-wide area network infrastructure is
sensibly structured. The scenario describes here is a typical one. If you are subject to a 3rd party network services supplier of dubious competence then you may have a more difficult task. |
| DSL Internet Connection |
| For server operation from your LAN, the up-link
speed is the most important, so a lot of cheap
ADSL services (say 128 kb up & 512 kb down)
are not very suitable as the band-width your
remote connections will see is the lower one. Lennox Computer recommend a symmetric 512/512 kb as a minimum server site DSL capacity. |
| Typical Network Structure |
| Router Setup |
| Telstra Exchange |
| DSL Modem /Router |
| Ethernet Switch |
| LILAC Server Ip Address 192.168.0.1 |
| Local IP Address 192.168.0.254 |
| Extermal IP Address e.g. 203.34.177.2 |
| Phone line |
| Using the software supplied with your DSL
router setup the router to provide for Network
Address Translation (sometimes referred to as
a "Virtual Server") such that the external Ip
address is mapped to the local Ip address of
the server PC recommended to be 192.168.0.1 Also ensure that inbound TCP connections are permitted on ports 10, 2001 & 3001 mapped through to the same ports on the LILAC server. (The LILAC server will also need outbound access on port 10, but this would normally be enabled anyway.) It is often desirable for Port 3389 to opened for inbound connections to allow Lennox Computer remote desktop management of your server. |
| DSL Service Providers |
| DSL services are available from a wide variety of suppliers
including Telstra, Optus, TPG etc. The quality of service and support varies, and the large carriers are often not the best, because the service, and support is poor and the large size of their networks introduce a lot of latency and delay in data transmission. Lennox Computer can provide a high grade commercial quality DSL service on the PowerTel network. This is a little more expensive than the mass market carriers, but much more stable and reliable. If you subscribe to a Lennox Computer DSL service, then we are in a strong position to set-up and mange all aspects of your wide area networking. |
